Kumbh Mela ( कुम्भ मेला) "kumbha mēlā", is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus gather to bathe in a sacred river. It is considered to be the largest peaceful gathering in the world where around 100 million people visit during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Allahabad. It is held every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik and Ujjain. Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these four places every twelfth year.
During the the first Maha Kumbh Mela gathering of the new millennium held from 09.01.2001 to 21.02.2001, Department of Post established post offices in each sector, in addition to a Central Post Office and four mobile floating post office units. Mobile Post Offices on boats were made available from 0700 hours to 1700 hours between Saraswati Ghat and Sangam area to provide postal services to devotees while on the way to take bath or boating.
The FDC cover shown here carries the mobile post office by boat postmark.
