Mobile Camel P.O. in Mithriya , Bikaner

Above is an extremely rare cover, which I acquired after several years of hunting, of the Mobile Camel P.O. in Mithriya , Bikaner. The cover is postmarked  3- 5- 1978 , and is very difficult to find.

A mobile camel post office was started on October 27, 1977 at Mithariya in Bikaner district. The postmaster was given an allowance of Rs 80 per month to maintain the camel.

Camels are the only reliable method of transportation in the Thar desert, and Mobile camel post offices are depicted in many cachets of special cover or stamps of India. But this one is posted in the Camel PO at Bikaner. Generally camels  are used to bear the postal articles on their back and wait in a particular time of a day in different locations of the desert. People know these timings and come to meet their postal need.

Am happy to have this in my collection , and add this gem to the unusual post offices in India.
