USA Cover dated 1971 sent from the Sea floor aboard the Marine Physical Laboratory's Remote underwater Manipulator (RUM) from a depth of 1300 ft.
RUMs are operated by ORB Consoles. ORB ( Ocean Research Buoy) and RUM are a pair of MPL vehicles that often work as a team. The Remote Underwater Manipulator (RUM) crawls about on the sea floor at depths to gather objects and samples, to take photographs, and to install deep-sea instruments.
There were covers with Postage due as well as without, and most of the covers carried during this expedition has the stamps taped to the cover, signifying that the ORB was inundated by water during the mission, making the covers damp.
