The Indian Postal department on 12 May 1978, opened a mobile
Post office on mules to provide postal services to 10 remote villages under the
Darjeeling postal circle. Darjeeling is a hill station north of Bengal in
India.
It was of a great help to the locals of these villages. Inaugurated by the then CPMG of the West Bengal, SK Ghosh, the opening ceremony created a lot of excitement among the people and the children in particular. Before the service of the mule mobile P.O., the villagers of these villages had to travel a distance of 18 kms to post a letter. However the mule mobile PO also had the facility of letter, registry and even savings bank.
